The Academy Council is made up of representatives from the Diocese, Parents, Staff and Local Community, all of whom donate their time and expertise freely for the benefit of the schools. They all bring something different, whether that is educational, professional or spiritual.
They are responsible for the overall strategic direction and focus of the schools. They are not responsible for the day-to-day running of the schools, which rests with James Evans, our Headteacher, and his staffing team. The Academy Council approve school policies and procedures, agree budgets, ensure the National Curriculum is taught to all children to the highest standard, that the children can learn in a clean and safe environment and also act as a “critical friend” to the Head of Schools. They offer support and advice, but where necessary they also challenge and ask questions that parents would want them to be asking.
They meet regularly at Full Academy Council meetings, of which there are 6 a year, one per term. Every representative, where possible, attends these meetings which usually last 2-3 hours. In addition, all members belong to at least one of four Committees. As part of an Academy Coucil Audit and Self-Evaluation, the members decided to streamline our Committees, make them more efficient, and have a more even workload across the team. There are agreed new Terms of Reference for these Committees, which set out what each Committee will be responsible for. All members sit on at least one Committee, Strategic, Business, Standards or Admissions depending upon their skills and experience.
In addition to this, each member has at least one area of responsibility which might be a curriculum area or individual class in either of the two schools. They will work closely with the relevant Staff Member throughout the academic year, reporting back to the Full Academy Council.
