PSHE
Intent
At Heytesbury C of E Primary School we use the Jigsaw scheme of work for our schools personal, social and health education. Jigsaw holds children at its heart, and its cohesive vision helps children understand and value how they fit into and contribute to the world. With strong emphasis on emotional literacy, building resilience and nurturing mental and physical health, Jigsaw 3-11 properly equips schools to deliver engaging and relevant PSHE within a whole-school approach. Jigsaw lessons also include mindfulness allowing children to advance their emotional awareness, concentration, focus and self-regulation. The Jigsaw lessons are structured to maximise these processes. Children and young people are at the heart of all Jigsaw Programmes. The aim is to improve learning capacity, resilience and emotional well-being and mental health and thereby enhance their life-chances.
Implementation
Jigsaw 3-11 offers a comprehensive programme for Primary PSHE, including statutory Relationships and Health Education, in a spiral, progressive and fully planned scheme of work, giving children relevant learning experiences to help them navigate their world and to develop positive relationships with themselves and others.
At Heytesbury C of E Primary School the children take part in one Jigsaw lesson a week. Teaching strategies are varied and are mindful of preferred learning styles and the need for differentiation.
There are six Puzzles in Jigsaw. At Heytesbury we run the first four pieces across two academic years. This enables us to ensure the correct sequence of learning across our mixed age classes. Once the children reach Year Six they have a separate PSHE sessions which look at the higher-level content of the Jigsaw units these are run as one puzzle each term.
The Puzzle are as follows:
- Puzzle 1: Being Me in My World (term one and two)
- Puzzle 2: Celebrating Difference (term three and four)
- Puzzle 3: Dreams and Goals (term one and two)
- Puzzle 4: Healthy Me (term three and four)
- Puzzle 5: Relationships (term five)
- Puzzle 6: Changing Me (term six)
Each of the sessions or pieces within the puzzles has two Learning Intentions: one is based on specific PSHE learning (purple) and one is based on emotional literacy and social skills development (green).
Puzzle piece five and six are taught in terms five and six each year. They contain the majority of our sex and relationship education (SRE) and as such is taught in a more year group specific manor to ensure that children gain the knowledge appropriate to their age.
Each Piece has two Learning Intentions: one is based on specific PSHE learning (purple) and one is based on emotional literacy and social skills development (green).
SMSC Links: Every Jigsaw lesson from Early Years to upper primary offers opportunities for children’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural (SMSC) development, and this is clearly mapped and balanced across each year group. Likewise, Jigsaw is designed to provide structured opportunities in every lesson to practice and enhance the five skills associated with the emotional literacy (self-awareness, social skills, empathy, motivation and managing feelings). These opportunities are vital for children’s development, their understanding of themselves and others and in increasing their capacity to learn.
British Values: Jigsaw PSHE 3-11 supports the British Values of Democracy, Rule of Law, Individual Liberty, Mutual Respect and Tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs. It has been mapped lesson by lesson against the British Values agenda.
Impact
The impact of PSHE is measured by the development of the whole child, through questioning, discussion and observations of relationships between friends, groups and within the school community and of course from the child’s own observations of how they feel.
The impact of our PSHE teaching is seen in the ability that children have to flourish within the school environment in terms of their perseverance, friendships, compassion and ability to be reflective and think deeply in regard to a wide range of circumstances and opportunities.
Through the development of progressive Health Education, all children will be able to make the right choices to keep themselves and others around them physically, emotionally and mentally safe and secure; they will have the confidence and resilience to seek or offer help when needed.
The development of progressive, secure and all-encompassing Relationship Education will provide all children with the emotional resilience needed to build healthy relationships throughout their lives and to take their place in society as tolerant, respectful and responsible citizens.
